How a Global Cruise Line Transformed Onboarding with Microblink

Client
A major global cruise line operating dozens of ships worldwide, known for delivering seamless and enjoyable travel experiences to millions of passengers annually.

Business Problem
Passenger onboarding is one of the most critical—and resource-intensive—phases in cruise operations. Each traveler must present a valid form of identification before boarding, and for many guests, that includes verifying they are over 21 for access to onboard amenities like bars and casinos.

Previously, this cruise line relied entirely on a manual process to handle ID checks. Teams of agents would visually inspect each ID, confirm passenger details, and ensure legal age requirements were met. Not only was this slow and inconsistent, but it also led to long lines, increased staffing demands, and the potential for human error. The experience often felt more like airport security than the start of a relaxing vacation.

As the cruise line expanded its operations post-pandemic, it needed a faster, more scalable solution that could maintain high accuracy while improving the passenger experience. Speed and reliability were non-negotiable—and any new system would have to integrate seamlessly into existing operations across all ships.

Solution

To streamline operations and improve the passenger experience, the cruise line implemented BlinkID as part of a hybrid solution: self-service kiosks equipped with BlinkID for ID scanning, complemented by a smaller number of staffed agents. BlinkID extracts data directly from physical IDs in real time with high accuracy, automatically checking for key criteria like age verification.

Thanks to BlinkID’s client-side machine learning, the solution enabled real-time auto-capture and ID classification—even during peak boarding hours when thousands of guests needed to be processed quickly. This ensured a fast, seamless experience at check-in, reducing wait times and minimizing bottlenecks.

The localized experience further enhanced accessibility for the cruise line’s global customer base. BlinkID supports over 20 languages and offers OCR capabilities for Latin, Arabic, and Cyrillic scripts, allowing the system to accurately process a wide variety of passports and national IDs from around the world.

Integration was fast and frictionless due to BlinkID’s lightweight SDK, which is under 4MB—significantly smaller than most competitors. This not only accelerated deployment across the fleet but also preserved app performance and device responsiveness, even on older kiosk hardware.

By implementing BlinkID, the cruise line met international compliance requirements, reduced operational costs through automation, and minimized human error—while delivering a smoother, more efficient check-in experience for guests and staff alike.

Results
The deployment of BlinkID has significantly improved the efficiency and scalability of passenger onboarding across the cruise line’s entire fleet. Highlights include:

  • Over 95% ID scanning accuracy, reducing errors and manual reviews
  • Faster processing times, helping passengers board quickly and comfortably
  • Minimal support needs, with almost no support tickets raised since deployment
  • High user satisfaction, thanks to an intuitive, easy-to-use interface

The cruise line reports that staff enjoy the simplicity of the system, and passengers appreciate the smoother boarding experience. BlinkID has become a core part of their onboarding process, helping ensure that every voyage starts off on the right foot.
