Romance Scam

A romance scam is a type of online fraud where a perpetrator creates a fake persona to deceive and manipulate individuals seeking romantic relationships online. The scammer typically initiates contact through dating websites or social media platforms, carefully establishing a relationship with their target by building emotional connections. They exploit the victim’s vulnerability and trust, often using flattery, empathy, and the promise of a future together.

At an opportune moment, the scammer starts asking for financial assistance by fabricating urgent situations such as medical emergencies, travel expenses, or investment opportunities. They compel the victim to send money or provide personal and financial information, which can be used for identity theft or further illicit activities. The fraudster continuously manipulates and emotionally pressures the victim, using various tactics to prolong the scam and maximize financial gain. Romance scams can incur devastating financial losses, emotional trauma, and long-term consequences for victims.
