When AI Agents Act (And Potentially Attack)
Lately, a new kind of anxiety has been surfacing in tech circles. Not about breaches or outages, but about agency. We;re reading stories about AI agents talking to each other on places like Moltbook. Agents posting. Agents coordinating. Agents developing behaviors humans can’t easily observe.
AI agents are here and they are beginning to initiate actions, interact with other agents, and operate continuously across systems. In many cases, they act with the same permissions and trust granted to the humans who deployed them.
This shift fundamentally changes the identity problem. When software can act, identity is no longer just about authentication. It becomes a question of who or what is acting, with what authority, and under what constraints.
When Agents Leave the Lab
What makes this moment different is not any single tool, but the pattern emerging across many of them. Open-source and semi-autonomous agent systems like OpenClaw are moving rapidly from experimentation into real business environments. These tools are capable of accessing files, messaging platforms, terminals, and cloud services, and then acting on that access without continuous human direction. They are being adopted not through formal procurement cycles, but quietly, by individuals and teams looking for speed and leverage.
At the same time, we are seeing the rise of agent-native ecosystems such as Moltbook, where AI agents interact with other agents directly, exchange information, and optimize behavior without human participation in the loop. Whether framed as novelty or experimentation, these environments point to a future where agents are not isolated tools, but participants in broader digital systems. They don’t just respond. They coordinate.
The risk is not that these agents are intentionally malicious. The risk is that they operate with borrowed trust inside systems that were never designed to recognize them as actors. They inherit credentials, reuse sessions, and blend into logs as expected behavior. From the outside, everything appears normal. From the inside, decisions are being made by entities that traditional identity systems cannot fully see or understand.

When Agents Interact With Other Agents
The challenge compounds as agents begin interacting with other agents.

At this point, traditional identity controls struggle not because they are broken, but because they were never designed for autonomous, non-human actors operating continuously.
Security teams may know which credential was used. They may not know:
- which actor initiated the behavior
- whether that actor was authorized to act in that context
- or whether the behavior aligns with policy and acceptable risk
Why Oversight Alone Is Not Enough
Some organizations respond by layering monitoring and oversight on top of agent behavior. This is a necessary step, but it is not sufficient on its own.
Observation without identity context is reactive. It can detect anomalies after they occur, but it cannot reliably govern behavior in real time. Without understanding who or what is acting, oversight systems lack the authority to prevent misuse before impact.
Effective control requires more than watching agents. It requires knowing them.
Why “Know Your Actor” Changes the Model
This is where Know Your Actor (KYA) becomes essential. Know Your Actor shifts identity from a point-in-time verification event into a continuous control system designed for environments where not every actor is human and not every action is initiated intentionally. Modern digital systems now include bots, autonomous AI agents, and hybrid human-agent workflows that operate continuously and at machine speed. Treating all of these actors as if they were interchangeable users is no longer sufficient.
In this world, identity cannot be reduced to a credential or a successful login. Knowing who authenticated tells you very little about who or what is actually acting at any given moment. Effective identity control requires understanding the role and authority an actor has been granted, how its behavior changes over time, and whether its actions remain consistent with policy and acceptable risk as conditions evolve. Context matters as much as authentication, especially when actions propagate automatically across systems.
Know Your Actor treats identity as living infrastructure rather than a static gate at the front door. Identity is continuously assessed, not just at the moment of access, but throughout an interaction as behavior, intent, and environment shift. This approach provides visibility before enforcement and context before decisions, allowing organizations to govern activity in real time rather than reacting after the fact.
In an agentic world, this distinction becomes critical. Assuming trust because a credential was valid is no longer enough. Actively governing trust based on who is acting, how they are behaving, and what they are authorized to do is what allows organizations to scale automation without losing control.
Leadership in an Agentic Environment
The arrival of autonomous agents does not require alarm. It requires responsibility.
Leaders must acknowledge that systems built for human-only interaction are no longer sufficient. Pretending otherwise creates blind spots that scale faster than teams can respond.
The real question is not whether AI agents will exist inside enterprises. That is already happening. The question is whether organizations will design identity and control systems that can see, understand, and govern every actor in motion.
Know Your Actor is not about slowing innovation. It is about making innovation sustainable. It ensures that as agency expands, accountability does not disappear.
